Trips to the nearby countryside

The surroundings of Drežnica uncover many natural places worth seeing, sacral monuments, the remains from World War I and the surrounding mountain peaks, which are also great for excursions.

The Ročica Gorge and Mt.Krn

The Koseč Streams and the Church of St. Just

Koseč is 1 km away from Drežnica. There is a very old church hidden under the village; the Church of St. Just. The spot where the church is built is believed to be very powerful with bioenergetics. Inside the church, we can admire the frescoes, dating from the Middle Ages. A trail leads us forth to the Stopnik Brook, flowing to the Ročica Stream in several waterfalls. At the outfall we turn around and continue the trip up the stream of the Ročica. We go across the second affluent of the Ročica - the Brusnik Brook, which also carved a deep and impassable gorge. Afterwards, we return to the road following the left bank of the Ročica. We can conclude our trip by visiting beekeepers and trying honey, mead…

The Kozjak Waterfall

We drive towards Kobarid to Zaročišče. Then we set out for the Kozjak Waterfall by foot. Along the path we can see the bunkers and the caverns from both World Wars. The Kozjak Waterfall is hidden in a kind of open subterranean hall, but it can be reached by an attractive footpath, 250 meters lower, the water falls again, this time as The Mali Kozjak Waterfall. We can conclude our trip with a picnic at Kamp Koren.

The Trip to World War I Chapel - Draga

The Draga Chapel was built by the Italian soldiers, trying to obtain some spiritual strength before leaving to the front. Sports clothes and footwear (mountaineering boots or gym shoes) are required. Departure in the morning, return in the late afternoon.

The Expedition to Mt. Krn and the Remains of the Isonzo Front

We will begin our ascension to Mt. Krn in the early morning. Half an hour later, a sign will warn us that we are entering into the Triglav National Park. After walking for an hour we have to choose between the Drežnica route (quite hazardous at the moment because of the earthquake!) and the winding, less demanding mule path. During our ascent towards the peak we are accompanied by the remains of the maelstrom of war which raged here 80 years ago.

Mt. Botognice (on the right) and Vrh nad Peski

In Gomišček shelter under the peak of Mt. Krn we take a rest and refresh ourselves with the food we brought with us or can order at the shelter.

When climbing to the peak, we will have a great view, as it should be on a mountain, 2245 m high. A major part of the front line from Vrata, Vršič, Bovec, Rombon to Tolmin, Mrzli Vrh, Mengore can also be seen.

In the meadow

We continue our expedition to the Krn notch and from there to Mt. Botognice and ahead to Peski. The slopes of all these mountains show the work of the soldiers from both sides of the front, trying to save their lives from the grenades and shots of the enemy, carved in the sheer rock. Furthermore, there was another battle to be fought at the same time - nature could be even less indulgent, especially in the winter.

From Peski, we come down to the lake in Lužnica. We proceed to the Leskovca and Zaslap meadows. We descend to Planica under Mt. Kožljak, passing by a World War I Chapel, down to Koseč and back to Drežnica.

The tour takes about ten hours of walking and is suitable also as a two-day trip (climbing to Mt. Krn in the afternoon; spending the night and continuing the next day).

Rucksack, suitable clothes and footwear required.

The expedition on Mt. Krasji vrh and the remains of the Isonzo Front

Mt. Krasji vrh over Magozd and St. Ann's church

Departure from Drežnica in early morning hours with suitable transportation to Zaprikraj meadow.

We set out for Mt. Krasji vrh. After taking a short rest at Volarnica karstic cave, we continue our trip to the remains of anti-aircraft guns used for attacking the Austian-Hungarian scout airplanes.

When arriving on the top of Mt. Krasji vrh (1772 m), a unique view opens, with the mountains in the north and you can even see the sea in the south on a clear day. The Mt. Kanin chain extends in the west, and there's Mt. Krn rising on the opposite side. A large part of the territory where the Isonzo Front took place, is seen from here.

The Soča river

When looking at the Soča paving its way through the Bovec Basin, Kobarid and Tolmin, we have to admit that it's truly a magnificent daughter of the mountains.

The meal, which we brought up from the valley, will do us good on the top of Mt. Krasji vrh.

Option No. 1: we continue to the peak Debeljak, where trenches, caverns and bombs which are still unexploded from World War I tell their own tale of the horrors and the absurdity of warfare.

When returning to Zaprikraj meadow, we take a rest in the company of herdsmen and cheese makers. We can find out for ourselves how good alpine milk really is, especially when remade into cheese, cottage cheese or fresh butter. We drive back to Drežnica.

Cheese making

Option No. 2: it is possible to continue the trip toward Dolec meadow. Constant ridge walking: a view opens to the Bovec Basin and Kobarid. We descent from Dolec to Magozd on a path used by mules in World War I.

The first tour takes about four hours of moderate walking; option No. 2 is a bit longer ( six hours). Rucksack, suitable clothes and footwear required.
