Water
pleasures on the crystal Soča River |
Water Sports
Rafting (descending
downstream in a rubber boat); kayaking; hydrospeed (descending
downstream with the help of a plastic floating device and wearing
fins)… These are only a few ways of how to relax on the
rapids of the Soča between Bovec and Kobarid. In this part, the
Soča is caught in a wild gorge, decorated by giant boulders,
rapids and pools. The world championship in kayak and canoe and
many other competitions of the highest level were also held in
this part.
Some streams which fall
into the Soča, offer another exciting enjoyment - canyoning.
While discovering savage gorges, carved by the nature for
thousands of years, we slide down natural chutes, we swim and jump
into pools, clear as crystal.
Mountain Biking
Mountain bikers will
definitely not be bored in Drežnica. Taking the road on the left
bank of the Soča to Trnovo and onwards to Čezsoča is very
interesting and not too straining. More demanding and better
prepared bikers can go up to the mountain meadows above Drežnica,
Zaprikraj in Zapleč (1200 m), the pastures on the southern side
of Krn or make a whole-day excursions to Stol (1673 m) or Livek
over the ridge of Kolovrat(1200 m) to Tolmin. It is also possible
to make pleasure trips to Tolmin on the left bank of the Soča or
to Breginj and the Nadiža which is great for a swim in the
summer.

Paragliding
There are several
suitable runways for paragliders around Drežnica. You can try it
by yourself or in a tandem from the mountains above Drežnica,
from Planica above Koseč, Stol or from Kuk above Livek. A bit
more out-of-the-way, but also an excellent runway, is Mangrtsko
sedlo.

Kanin |
Skiing
Kanin above Bovec, the
highest Slovenian ski slope, is half an hour drive away from Drežnica.
A cable car takes us to the attractive ski slope, up to 2300
meters above sea level. There can be several meters of snow in the
winter, therefore it is possible to ski here until late spring,
sometimes even until summer. There are also smaller ski slopes
around: Livek above Kobarid (12 km from Drežnica), Čezsoča (25
km) and Log pod Mangrtom (30 km).
In the winter, the
mountains above Drežnica offer excellent conditions for tour and
extreme skiers. The mountain chain receives abundant rainfall and
snowfall and snow remains for a long time on the northern slopes.
Experienced skiers make the best of it by enjoying great tours to
Krn Lake, Bogatin, Vogel or the lakes under Triglav.
Alpine Climbing
Mt. Krn with its walls
can also represent a challenge to more experienced mountaineers.
These mountains are especially attractive for climbers in the
winter, when the walls carry numberless icefalls of respectable
height. The biggest one is the west wall of Mt. Krn over Drežnica
with its 800 meters. The first ones to climb the wall were the
local people. It has several courses. The difficulty of the wall
reaches up to VI+ ( for example the Eagle directions, or the Silvo
Kragelj memory course); most of the courses have the mark IV or V.
The north wall of Mt. Krn is much shorter (150 m), which is
especially suitable for winter climbing.

the western rock wall of Mt. Krn |
In the winter, the north
wall of the neighbouring Mt. Botognice is very interesting; the
400 meters-high south wall also reveal many possible courses.
Other adjoining mountains will also keep climbers busy; especially
the southwest walls of Velika Baba (2014 m), Lemež (2041 m),
Maselnik (1903 m), the west wall of Krnšica (2142 m), Šmohor
(1931 m) and Škofič (2012 m) and the south wall of Srednji vrh
(2032 m).
Pay attention! The Easter
earthquake of April 1998 made the stoney layers in the Krn
Mountain chain badly shaken, therefore any climbing must be made
with even more caution than usual. |
